Five Years of Admitted Student Gatherings

Five Years of Admitted Student Gatherings *Scene opens* Im standing in front of a house with my family. MIT branded balloons are tied to the mailbox. There is a poster of the Dome on the front door. Inside, we are welcomed into the MIT community by alums, students, other parents, and fellow future classmates. We enjoy food as we talked about MIT, New Jersey, cool things to do at CPW, what we enjoyed about high school, potential majors, and what we wanted to be in our futures. At one point, we sat down and listened to a sophomore tell us about her MIT experience. I dont remember exactly what was said, but I remember I was excited. I was excited to be there. I was excited that CPW was in less than a week. I was excited that I beat all the odds and that I was now wearing my MIT jacket around school as a student and not an applicant. That was my first Admitted Student Gathering in March 2013. And Ive gone every year since (except junior year, sadly). 2013 as a Prefrosh Me in the gray blazer, second row. 2014 as a Freshman This time I was invited to speak as a student along with other 17s. It was my first time on the other side. My turn to tell the 2018 prefrosh about MIT. 2015 as a Sophomore Speaking to the 2019s, halfway through MIT myself. 2016 as a Junior I was in San Francisco during my junior year spring break so I didnt get to go to the New Jersey Student Gathering that year :(. 2017 as a Senior This past Sunday. Bittersweet. It was my last Admitted Student Gathering as a student. I tried to impart on the 2021s everything that Ive learned in my four years at MIT. 2018 as an Alumni *insert picture next year in March 2018* Admitted Student Gatherings happen every year around MIT spring break, all around the world. As evidenced by this blog post and my near perfect attendance, I highly recommend going to one. Theres still some happening the second half of this week, and last-minute decisions are always fun. Side note: I found a fun little website Id like to share with everyone. I wrote this post with the uncomfortable help of The Most Dangerous Writing App. You set your session for however long you want (3-60 min) and begin typing. Tp what extent was the Spanish-American War a turning point in the development of American foreign policy? The Spanish-American War of 1898 could be seen as the pivotal point in foreign policy as it marks America’s first engagement with a foreign enemy in the dawning age of modern warfare however, one could also argue that the idea had always existed in American politics. Until the end of the nineteenth century, American foreign policy essentially followed the guidelines laid down by George Washington, in his Farewell Address to the American people: â€Å"The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is—in extending our commercial relations—to have with them as little political connection as possible.† By avoiding†¦show more content†¦What impaired their independence was ultimately up to America and this gave the power to control Cuban affairs. Another victory through the Treaty of Paris was the possession of the Philippines. Though the Filipino independence leader Emilio Aguinaldo had aided in the defeat of Spain in 1898, USA refused independence to the Islands and a vicious three year war ensued. A civil government was created after the capture of Aguinaldo under William Taft and this showed a drastic change in American foreign policy. They could no longer justify interference with the excuse of the islands being within its sphere of influence but McKinley argued that America had the role to â€Å"uplift and civilize and christianize [Filipinos] as our fellow-men for whom Christ also died. McKinley was either unaware or simply chose not to inform the people that, except for some Muslim tribesmen in the south, the Filipinos were Roman Catholics, and, therefore, already Christians. In reality, the annexation of the Philippines was the centerpiece of the large policy pushed by the imperialist cabal to enlist the United Stat es in the ranks of the great powers. We’ve all heard the phrase â€Å"Charity begins at home.† This statement holds very true in my case, not because we needed help but rather because we were taught at an early age to provide help whenever possible. In our current economy there are many people not just in our community but throughout the world and beyond that are struggling. I was fortunate to grow up in a household with two loving parents who shared the importance of fundamental beliefs and values. It was later that I realized this home was being built for someone that grew up with me in the same church years ago. For this reason, it became even more rewarding to me. To Kill A Mockingbird Respect Essay Example For Students

To Kill A Mockingbird Respect Essay Respect is an admiration of a person, a personal quality or ability. Respect, being one of the most substantial messages, plays significant role in the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird. In this response, three different topics will be disputed. The topics are as follows; respect throughout the novel, respect of an individual character and necessity of respect for different human races. Throughout the novel, there are a few events that demonstrate respect. For instance, Atticus is taking the Tom Robinsons case because he respects all people in same way no matter what their classes are or skin colours are different. Another example would be when Jem and Scout stop pestering Boo Radley after he gave Scout the blanket. The kids respect Boo for giving them the gifts especially the blanket and decide not to bother him anymore. As I pointed out some events, these events are the evidence that the theme, respect can be easily noticeable. We will write a custom essay on To Kill A Mockingbird Respect specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Out of all of the characters on To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is recognized as the most respected character. The reasons why he is so admired are because first of all, the way he treats and talks to people in same manner and with honesty. He never talks behind anyones back and moreover he tries to understand and see from their point of view. Secondly, Atticus has the nerve that others dont. For example, he took the Tom Robinsons case. Even though his neighbors criticized him for taking the case, he was willing to do it because he knew that his belief was right and Tom Robinson was innocent. As a result, all of his morality, honesty, and fairness had earned him the respect. The setting of novel, Great Depression is the era when the severity of racism hit the highest peak. Racisms had a major impact of the Tom Robinson trial. Tom Robinson was declared guilty in spite of Atticus proved evidences which verify Toms innocence. In addition, Mr. Dolphus Raymond, known as the town drunk carries his drink in a paper bag. However, the drink in the bag turns out to be Coca-Cola, not an alcohol beverage. He pretended being drunk because this made people understand easier why he was being friendly and nice towards black people. These two examples explain why we respects different races and make us look back what we have done. By reading the book To Kill A Mockingbird all the viewers can learn respecting people around us, believing in yourself and always being fair is the lesson that is taught from the author and the characters inside the book. I hope more people would have a chance to read this book and change their moral belief and realize that our skin colours do not define who we are.
